Problems with Salesforce.com Security Token

In Nov 2007, Salesforce.com introduced the concept of security tokens that affects how applications like ActiveOutlook log into Salesforce.com. As a result of this, you may see a login error in ActiveOutlook even though you are using your correct username and password.

Here are 2 ways to fix the problem:

Option 1 (more secure):

Every Salesforce.com user (like yourself) in your organization who uses ActiveOutlook needs to do the following:

bullet

Log into Salesforce.com. Go to "Setup > My Personal Information > Reset Security Token". Click the "Reset Security Token" button to trigger an email that will contain their security token.

bullet

After you receive an automated email from Salesforce.com, select and copy the token from the email.

bullet

In the ActiveOutlook login dialog, replace your usual password with combination of the password and the security token. For example, if your password is “MyPassword” and the security token is “XXXXXX”, enter “MyPasswordXXXXXX” into the password field. You can select the "Save Password" checkbox in the login dialog to save the the password that you entered.

This will allow ActiveOutlook to log into Salesforce.com using the proper security token.

Option 2 (less secure):

Your Salesforce.com administrator needs to do the following only once and that will fix the problem for all the ActiveOutlook users. In fact, this solution should also fix the problem for other Salesforce.com addins that your organization may use:

bullet

Log into Salesforce.com with administrative privileges.

bullet

In Salesforce.com. go to "Setup > Administration Setup > Security Controls > Network Access".

bullet

Click the "New" button and enter "0.0.0.0" for "Start IP Address" and "255.255.255.255" for "End IP Address". Click the Save button to save these settings.

Important: By doing the above, you are allowing any Salesforce.com user to access their Salesforce.com account from any computer.
